In 9th month of pregnancy ...

Pregnancy month nine starts at (pregnancy) week 36 till week 40. Most of the babies are born in this month. Although a normal pregnancy is considered to be of 40 weeks long, a normal baby sometime may be born as early as in 36th week and some pregnancy may last up to 42 weeks and few pregnancies even lasting beyond 42 weeks.

Baby is fully developed and is getting ready to be born any moment, the baby at the time of birth can be anywhere from 17 inches to 22 inches long and weighs from 7 pounds to 10 pounds depending upon multiple factors such as parent’s genetics, baby's DNA, nutrition, age of mother, number of child born to mother before this pregnancy, etc.

The average weight of different babies at the end of this month is about 7.63 pounds or 3.46 kg and length is about 20.16 inches or 51.2 centimeter measured Crown to Heel.

In final weeks of pregnancy, a regular health checkup of both mother and baby is necessary, and in some cases alternate day’s checkup may be required.

In 1st week of this month   (pregnancy week 36)
  • Baby continues to grow and snuggles down into the pelvis, the benefit of this is that breathing becomes easier, but mother may have to urinate more often.
  • In final weeks of pregnancy, a regular health checkup of both mother and baby is necessary. It is also important to remember that while baby has lot of things already developed, there is significant brain, lung and immunity development still going on and these last few weeks before birth makes huge difference in your baby's life.
  • Don't forget to brush your teeth at least twice a day as premature labour can be induced by a gum infection.
  • Baby will grow to average length of about 18.66 inches or 47.4 centimeter Crown to Heel and weighs about 5.78 pounds or 2622 grams towards the ends of this week.
  • Depending upon parent's genetics, DNA of baby and other factors the baby however may weigh any where between 5¾ pounds to 6 pounds and can be between 18 inches to 20½ inches tall (Crown to Heel).

In 2nd week of this month   (pregnancy week 37)
  • Baby this week alone must have put about 500 grams weight. They now look very much like a newborn. Baby is practicing breathing by inhaling amniotic fluid. In vast majority of pregnancies, the fetus begins to move into head down delivery position.
  • Baby has grown and now do not have much space to move its whole body around, but a sharp jab in the ribs or in pelvis can often be felt by the mother, in case you do not get a regular baby kicks, please speak to your midwife or doctor immediately.
  • Lanugo, the soft downy hair which covered baby's skin is getting reabsorbed and will disappear soon. Vernix Caseosa, the white greasy coating on its skin too will be reabsorbed.
  • Baby will grow to average length of about 19.13 inches or 48.6 centimeter Crown to Heel and weighs about 6.30 pounds or 2859 grams towards the ends of this week.

In 3rd week of this month   (pregnancy week 38)
  • Baby continues to lay down more fat and gains weight with every passing day. The baby may be gaining as much as 1 ounce or about 28 grams every day. Although increase in its length has now been slowed down.
  • The baby is now fully developed, and is adding connections between neurons in the brain which will continue well beyond its birth, is developing lungs and adding strength to its immune system.
  • Baby's movements may slow down from now onwards and are quite restricted, simply because there isn't enough room to move around, but a sharp jab in the ribs or in pelvis can often be felt by the mother, in case you do not get a regular baby kicks, please speak to your midwife or doctor immediately.
  • Baby is also conserving energy for the difficult process of birth.
  • Baby will grow to average length of about 19.61 inches or 49.8 centimeter Crown to Heel and weighs about 6.80 pounds or 3083 grams towards the ends of this week.

In 4th week of this month   (pregnancy week 39)
  • You are almost done; Baby is fully developed and is preparing for a big day to be born, the baby is anywhere from 17 inches to 22 inches long and weighs around 6½ to 9 pounds depending upon multiple factors such as parent’s genetics, baby's DNA, nutrition, age of mother, number of child born to mother before this pregnancy, etc.
  • The average weight of different babies at the end of this week is about 7.25 pounds or 3288 grams and length is about 19.96 inches or 50.7 centimeter tall (measured Crown to Heel).
  • Baby's brain is still laying down nerves and connections between them which will continue throughout its early childhood. Baby is also busy developing its lungs and making immune system stronger.
  • Baby is practicing breathing and producing more surfactant. If your baby was to be born now their lungs would be mature enough to support them and they would ideally not need medical assistance.
  • Try to read to your baby while it is still in the womb, play music and sing to it and your baby is likely be more clever and smart as a result of this early stimulation.

In 5th week of this month   (pregnancy week 40)
  • Baby is fully developed and is getting ready to be born any moment, the baby is anywhere from 17 inches to 22 inches long and weighs from 7 pounds to 10 pounds depending upon multiple factors such as parent’s genetics, baby's DNA, nutrition, age of mother, number of child born to mother before this pregnancy, etc.
  • The average weight of different babies at the end of this week is about 7.63 pounds or 3462 grams and length is about 20.16 inches or 51.2 centimeter tall (measured Crown to Heel).
  • Baby's brain is still developing and building more nerves and connections between them and the same will continue throughout its early childhood. Baby is also busy making immune system stronger and developing its lungs, the baby’s lung will continue to mature till your baby reaches 8 years of age.
  • Meconium, the baby’s first stool present in the baby's intestines will be shed as the first movement after birth. Meconium is a black, thick, tarry substance and in about 30% of the time, the baby will actually pass this stool before birth.
  • Many babies have enlarged genitals when they are born. This is result of pregnancy hormones causing them to swell. Over first few weeks after birth the enlarged genitals do settle down to their normal size.
  • Don't be frightened if your OB-GYN says your baby is large as it is extremely difficult to judge a baby's weight accurately from outside.
  • Few pregnancies particularly of the first time mother and young age mother may last few days to few weeks beyond due date, though it is perfectly normal, due consultation with your midwife or doctor is necessary.
